What Is Brain Fog?
It can also be known as "Postictal delirium", the after phase of some seizures. "Brain fog" appears to be the most common post-seizure complication and can last for hours or even days. There appears to be wide variation in the duration of other post-seizure symptoms. Based on the length of brain fog, it can have long term effects on short term memory and functions of the brain. This is defined by the Epilepsy Foundation.
How Brain Fog Effects Me Post Seizure
For me I will be confused, heightened emotionally on both spectrums, and at times unable to comprehend even the smallest tasks, and almost all the time I fall asleep. I also consistently have problems finding the right words when talking. I think I have said something, but I start in the middle of a sentence. Both frustrating to me and whomever I am talking to. So if I asked about something again, I am not trying to be a smart--- I honestly do not recall the convo at all.
I don't even remember what had happened even though I might have appeared to be aware during the seizure. Due to these reasons my family needs to watch me closely when I am awake or even just walking around after this occurs for my safety. Even though it makes no sense, I honestly at times truly have no idea what I am doing and truly believe I am doing what is the right way and they are wrong. At times due to my emotions being out of whack, my family probably wants to stay away but keep a keen eye on me anyways. So imagine me who is going through menopause and also has brain fog at the same time, bless their patience with me. Love you all!
How Can This Can Effect My Brain and Potentially Others
This can have a damaging effect on someone's hippocampus, and in mine it has shrunk it some. It has also caused scar tissue on parts of my brain due to the seizures occurring in the temporal lobe regions and going into brain fog. I have had scar tissue removed during my two brain surgeries, but it has not improved my memory.
Dementia is always a scary thought on my mind. Due to much of what occurs by brain fog and things that I have experienced with my family I already have forgotten, or I think some things have happened and it truly did not.
Studies have shown people with epilepsy develop Alzheimer's disease at a rate 6 times higher than the non-epileptic population, and seizures can damage the memory centers of the brain and contribute to dementia. I get a double whammy as Alzheimer/dementia runs in my family.
