Did You Know Mondays, Yes I know It's Tuesday. Read On...

Where And How It All Began:

Whe lived in Fargo-Moorhead at the time when I was first diagnosed with Epilepsy. It began that I seemed to be passing out often and having what we thought at the time were just syncope spells(since I had them in HS, caused by very low blood pressure). So we saw a Cardiologist in Fargo, and he sent me to Neurologist as he believed something else was happening as well. The Neurologist sent me onto Mayo Clinic in Rochestor as he couldn't figure things out, and felt I needed to see a speciliast.

Mayo Clinic ran many tests. I had a MRI, CT Scan, EEGs ran, Cardiac tests and well I can't remember everything exactly. (fog brain going on today) In the end the Mayo neurologist said, well you do have epilepsy but you are also having syncope spells. This is why your body and brain are wreaking havoc on itself. It seems at times when you have a seizure your blood pressure drops, causing you to fall at times or on the flipside you blood pressure drops causing a seizure to come on. Also, this type of seizure is more common in children and not many adults are diagnosed.

My first type of seizures that I was diagnosed with were absence seizures also known as petit mal.

In the image below it provides the basic defintion, and some sample indicators. These type of seizures also occur on both sides of the brain. In the image are just a few signs and you can see by just these small things occurring on why it was tough to know if I was falling due to my syncope spells or something else.

My Absence Seizures:

(as a reminder I am not a medical professional, this is simply my perspective and or description by others who observe me tell me what they see)

Repitive movements, is a common one for me now. My husband or sons and or family members might observe me rubbing my legs while seated and or my hands rubbing together. There are times too where I might stop talking, and then when I started again it wouldn't make sense, because I would have "lost time". I would also at times be cooking and they would say something to me but I would not respond and in the begining before we knew, we assumed I just couldn't hear them and or I was just focused. This also at times occured when I was folding clothes or placing dishes away. Especially when our sons were very young these aren't things you notice. Especially when most of these type of seizures last 10-30 seconds long. It wasn't really until, I started falling as well as my eyelids fluttered and my eyes turn upward, that we became concerned way back then. These are just some examples.

Walking Absence Seizures:

YES, you can be walking when an absence seizure occurs. With me and my syncope spells is where it was confusing the doctors because falls are not typical with these type of seizures. The person can be walking and all of a sudden stop briefly (looking like they were thinking about something) and begin walking again, but they have no idea now what they are doing or where they are. Again they are so brief these go unnoticed or diagnosed. Most of the time in children they only become noticed once in the classroom.

I would fall during mine, due to the blood pressure dropping even lower during my absence seizure when it was already extrmely low. With very young boys at the time this was obviously a huge concern.

Now you know, with a little snapshot but if you want more details, I would love to talk on how mine have evolved and what we did then and now.
