Friends & Family Fridays= Inward & Onward With Diana DeVaul

Friends & Family Fridays

I chose my sister-in-law, Diana DeVaul for this Friday. Based on her continued blogging which contains some aspects of how to properly meditate and usage of mindfulness. This was something my neurologist suggested I do daily to assist with relaxing my mind. I felt by sharing her blog/website it could help others living with uncontrolled epilepsy, as it has helped me.

Please read on to hear it in her words

DESCRIBE YOURSELF AND WHY YOU BEGAN YOUR BLOG

As a spiritual seeker I felt inspired to start dianadevaul.com and subsequent Inward & Onward blog to write my way through the awakening process while supporting others on the path. Being of service is a passion of mine and connecting with others in this way has been beautiful.

Relating to this drive for service, I have followed Marissa’s blog since its inception watching her tirelessly advocate for others. Honestly, because she is my incredible sister-in-law I would support anything she chooses to do, but it is a perk to connect with her as a fellow blogger.

HOW DOES YOUR BLOG BENEFIT THOSE LIVING WITH EPILEPSY? WHY HAVE YOU BECOME AN EPILEPSY ADVOCATE?

It’s common to feel helpless when you watch a loved one go through the ups and downs of living with a chronic condition like epilepsy. There isn’t anything I can physically do to ease the challenges Marissa faces, but I am able to be a compassionate witness to her experience. Reading her blog, sending her notes, and celebrating the blessings in her life are ways I show up for her. I hope she feels the love behind all of this.

As for how my website and blog may be helpful for those affected by epilepsy, it can be broken down into four concepts. I leave it up to you to determine which ones feel supportive and which ones to let go. Herein lies the power of choice. For those whose choice was taken from them due to epilepsy, I hope it feels like a tiny spark of hope to help reclaim your inner power.

Watching the stories we tell ourselves:

Through mindfulness and other grounding techniques we can grow our awareness of the thought loops running in our head. More often than not, these stories can be fearful or unkind. My website offers all sorts of tools to help you begin to listen within.

Growing our self-compassion:

Once we know our stories, we can take steps to change them into something more kind. Placing a hand over your heart and acknowledging we are doing our best is a great place to start.

Learning to listen to our body cues:

When living with a chronic condition, it becomes essential to recognize and respond to the cues our body offers us. Taking time to pause and turn inward allows the mind-body connection to strengthen. This is how we invite healing in. Sometimes it means resting, other times our bodies crave movement. All we have to do is listen.

Finding the gifts within the storm

There have been so many times when I am having dinner with my husband and boys, that we discuss the resilience of Marissa and her family. To us, they are an example of the true meaning of unconditional love. Through their challenges they are a tight-knit, unstoppable unit. There is deep grace in this.

"Thank you for allowing me into this space and for including me in a small part of your journey. May healing find you today and always."
